Charles May, M.D., Sports Medicine
Arthroscopic and Reconstructive Surgery of the
Knee and Shoulder


Dr. May is a native of Macon, Georgia.  He graduated cum laude from the U niversity of Georgia and received his medical doctorate from Emory University in Atlanta where he graduated with honors.  He went on to complete his residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Texas Southwestern/Parkland Hospital in Dallas. 

After finishing his residency, Dr. May moved to Vail, Colorado where he completed a fellowship in Sports Medicine/Knee and Shoulder Surgery at the prestigious Steadman Hawkins Clinic.  The clinic is internationally known as a leader in research focusing on arthroscopic treatment of both upper and lower extremity injuries.  While in Colorado, Dr. May was involved in the care of the Denver Broncos, Colorado Rockies and the United States Ski Team, as well as many other professional, collegiate, high school and recreational athletes. 

Since moving to Rome from Vail in the fall of 2004, Dr. May has continued to provide care to athletes of all ages and abilities.  He is a team physician for local high schools and provides a free screening clinic for high school athletes throughout the school year.  In addition to caring for local athletes, Dr. May serves as a physician for the United States Men’s Alpine Ski Team and travels throughout the world covering training camps and races.  

In addition to Sports Medicine, Dr. May’s practice focuses on treating ailments of the shoulder, elbow, knee and ankle using advanced arthroscopic techniques, as well as joint replacement of the knee and shoulder.

 
Colin Matheny, PA-C

Colin Matheny is a native of Cherokee County, Alabama.  He attended Cherokee County High School, where he graduated with honors.  He completed his undergraduate work at Jacksonville State University, graduating magna cum laude with a biology major and chemistry minor.  He was the President of his class at the University of South Alabama, where he graduated  in 2006 with a Master of Health Sciences degree in Physician Assistant Studies.  His interests include sports medicine and arthroscopic surgery of the shoulder and knee.  He has worked for Dr. Charles B. May, Jr., since September of 2006. Colin is married to the former Emily Padgett of Rome.
